How to Watch the World Indoor Championships

How to Watch the World Indoor Championships

| On 17, Mar 2016

The IAAF World Indoor Championships start tonight in Portland’s Oregon Convention Center. Of course, you want to know how to take in all of the action. We’ve got it all right here for you.

The IAAF microsite for the Worlds has everything you need to know about the meet: schedule, start lists, live results and a live blog, news, and more. If you have a smart phone, the IAAF app is a must-have.

The Schedule

For a detailed schedule go to the IAAF microsite. Here are the basics.

Thursday night (7:00 PT/10:00 ET): Men’s and women’s pole vault finals

Friday afternoon (11:00am PT/2:00pm ET): heptathlon, pentathlon, qualifying rounds

Friday night (5:00 PT/8:00 ET): Finals include men’s 60 meters, women’s 60 hurdles, men’s shot put, women’s long jump, continuation of the heptathlon, conclusion of the pentathlon

Saturday afternoon (11:00am PT/2:00pm ET): women’s triple jump final, qualifying rounds, continuation of the heptathlon

Saturday night (5:00 PT/8:00 ET): conclusion of the heptathlon plus
finals in men’s 400, 800, high jump, and triple jump, and women’s 60, 1500, and shot put

Sunday afternoon (12:30 PT/3:30 ET): all other finals

Television coverage

NBC Sports Network schedule:
Friday (actually early Saturday): 12:30 to 2:00am ET, tape-delayed package
Saturday: LIVE from 9:30 to 11:00pm ET
Sunday: LIVE from 4:00 to 7:00pm ET

CBC schedule:
Saturday: 5:00 to 6:00pm ET, tape-delayed package
Sunday: 3:00 to 4:00pm local time, tape-delayed package

Webcasts

NBC Sports Live Extra is the live streaming source in the USA. The schedule I’ve seen indicates they will most sessions, but not all:
Thursday from 10:00pm to 12:30am (ET)
Friday from 1:30pm to 6:00pm and 8:00pm to 11:00pm (ET)
Saturday from 2:00pm to 5:00pm and 8:00pm to 11:00pm (ET)
Sunday from 3:30pm to 6:30pm (ET)

Another option is CBC’s webcasts, which will offer complete coverage of the championships (including that missing Saturday morning session). The last time I tried, it was not blocked in the USA.
LATE EDIT: CBC webcasts are no longer available in the USA.

Yet another option is the array of pirate feeds offered by WatchAthletics.com…but your antivirus software might not like them.

IAAF Radio

The IAAF Radio service offers streaming audio coverage of major IAAF events. It’s a great way to follow the action while doing something else — work, working out, or whatever other parts of your life intrude on following track and field.

Its coverage is cut down a bit for these World Indoor Championships, and there will be no coverage of Thursday night’s pole vaults. The schedule:
Friday, 6:00 to 7:00pm ET (summary of morning session) and 8:30pm to midnight (live evening session)
Saturday, 6:00 to 7:00pm ET (summary of morning session) and 8:20 to 11:00pm (live evening session)
Sunday, 3:00 to 6:00pm ET (live afternoon session)

Keep your eyes on the Daily Relay for the best matchups of each day.

  1. Michael

Well, the NBC LiveStream totally sucks – for Friday evening at least.
Fractured coverage of the 60m Womsn hurdles and Mens 60m Semis and then totally cut out. Nothing more !
    Thank heavens for IAAF Radio.
Oh, and he CBC coverage is not available for USA.

  2. Josh

Those streams via watchathletics.com worked very well. I did not miss a single event.
